Mr. JIN LI
(Violinist & Violist, 20 years teaching
experiences)
Born into a musical family in Guangzhou, Jin Li started learning the violin at the age of five.
In 1979, he made an exception when he was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of
Music, Primary school where he studied with Yang Jianhua. A year later, he was selected by
Yehudi Menuhin to study music in England under the tutelage of Menuhin himself and
David Takeno. During his four years at the Yehudi Menuhin school, Jin,an outstanding
student ,was granted a scholarship, gave many concerts throughout England as well as
interviews on BBC television. Jin Li was the first violinist to perform in London’s Barbican
arts centre when it was officially opened in 1982.At the age of 20,he went to Indiana, USA
to further his studies with world renowned violinist Josef Gingold.
In 1985,Jin made his American debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the Royal
Philharmonic orchestra, later that year, he was invited to appear with Yehudi Menuhin and
the NHK symphony orchestra at the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the United
Nations which was televised worldwide. He has appeared as soloist with the Central
Philharmonic Orchestra of Beijing, the Leeds Youth Orchestra and Bourmouth Symphony
orchestra, and performed extensively in France, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Egypt,
Romania and China. In 1999,Jin Li held a concert in Guangzhou in memory of his teacher
Menuhin.
Jin li recorded Bach double violin concerto with Menuhin and the London symphony
orchestra in 1981,and several violin pieces with Geoffrey Parsons in 1983.In 1998,six
showpieces performed by Jin li was chosen into a CD,titled Violin Classic under the Philips
label.In 2003,his first solo CD was released in China.Until now,Jin has made 7 solo albums
which caused good reviews in the music lover scene.
He is currently a first violinist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and also teaching
in schools program under International W&Y PTE LTD.
Mr. Goh Seng Pin
(Pianist, Violinist, Music theory, 20 years
teaching experiences)
Teach piano playing, violin playing, and music theory.
Play piano accompaniment for instruments, voices and choirs for
exams, performances and competitions.
Teach mainly in the east, northeast, north and central areas, and in
own music studio, though other areas are possible as well.
Piano Playing:
Admitted Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music, London (LTCL) in early teens. Obtained 88 out
of 100 marks for Performer’s Diploma.
Awarded Diploma of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM) in Principles
of Instrumental Teaching.
Awarded The Certificate of Teaching, Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music (CTABRSM).
Have been teaching for more than 15 years. 7 of those years involved teaching Classical Piano
Course and Yamaha Pianoforte Course in Yamaha Music School at least 15 hours per week.
Teach all levels, from beginner to ATCL/DipABRSM.
Violin Playing:
Passed ABRSM Grade 8 with distinction in early teens.
Played in the Singapore Youth Orchestra (SYO, now renamed Singapore National Youth Orchestra)
for 6 years during Secondary School and Junior College years, playing 2nd Violin then 1st Violin.
Participated in SYO tour to London and Perth, on exchange programs with the local youth
orchestras.
Joined the National Junior College (NJC) String Orchestra, playing the 1st Violin. Participated in the
Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Western Symphony Orchestra category, combining with NJC
Symphonic band and obtained distinction award.
Played in XYO – Our Musical Journey at the Victoria Concert Hall on 5 July 2015. It was the reunion
of the members of the Singapore Youth Orchestra of the 1980s, who were under the tutelage of
Cultural Medallion winner, Vivien Goh. It celebrated the orchestra’s 35th anniversary which
dovetails with Singapore’s 50th anniversary celebrations (SG50).
Have been teaching for more than 7 years.
Music Theory:
Passed the required theory exam in LTCL Performer’s Diploma for a full certificate in early teens.
Passed ABRSM Grade 8 Theory of Music with Distinction twice, once under the old syllabus in early
teens, and once under the new syllabus.
Teach all levels, from beginner to Grade 8. Will link Grades 6 to 8 music theory with the students’
repertoire.
Can have group music theory class if students prefer.
Piano and violin playing lessons include music theory. Can omit if the student does not wish to
learn music theory beyond grade 5, though knowledge of Grades 6 to 8 music theory will help
students to analyze the repertoire that they are playing better, which will in turn help them to
understand their repertoire and improve in their playing.
Piano Accompaniment:
Choir pianist for more than 20 years. Performed in the Sing Sheng Anniversary concert in 2003, in
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2011, in the Choral Association Concert in the Esplanade Concert
Hall in 2014 and in SG50 Concert in the Victoria Concert Hall on 8 August 2015. Performed in
Taiwan to fellow association members in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2010.
Play piano accompaniment for instruments and voices for exams, performances and competitions
for more than 25 years.
Pianist for Raffles Institution Choir during Secondary School.
As is a violin player, is familiar with the playing of string instruments. Can offer suggestion on
technical aspect, and can feel along with soloist in their music better.
As is an orchestra player, is familiar with the timbre of Wind instruments as well. Can breathe
together with the soloist.
Has perfect pitch in most standard orchestral instruments.
Academic Credentials:
Master of Science in Safety, Health & Environmental Technology (MSc. (SHE Tech)) from the
National University of Singapore
Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) (B. Eng (Chem)) from the National University of Singapore
Teaching Perspective:
Left a full-time position in a Multi-National Company (MNC) in the Engineering, Safety, Health &
Environmental industries to dedicate more time to pursue interest in music.
Provide a holistic music instruction. Love to work with all levels of students, from preschoolers to
adults. Teach students learning for leisure and those who aim to take music exams.
Lessons will be tailor-made for individual students. Suitable starting methods will be selected for
beginners. More technical and challenging pieces, in all genres of music, will be chosen for more
advanced students.
He is passionate about teaching music. Aim to teach a well-balanced repertoire to connect passion and
technique, making the lesson more enjoyable. Work on the vision that students will continue to enjoy
music even after they are no longer learning to play the instrument.
